The brief for this project centred on creating a unique dwelling for a private client which is set within a tranquil woodland clearing. A thorough analysis of the site led to the design concept being established, which sought to create a home in which the occupants feel as if they are living within forest canopy.
The building represents an abstract expression of a tree, with a central spiral stair and the habitable rooms radiating out from the centre of the plan. The accommodation rises at half-storey intervals, creating opportunities for split-level connections and double-height spaces.
The building footprint and structural design were carefully considered to minimise any impact on the surrounding tree roots. The facade was designed to feature timber louvres across the windows which help to limit artificial light emissions from the building at night which would otherwise impact on the local bat population and other nocturnal wildlife.
